After time in the South Pacific as a member of the U.S. Army, he met his first wife, Gertrude.  Their first date was a trip to Ravinia, where they heard the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Both of them loved classical music.  Early dates at Ravinia included concerts conducted by Artur Rodzinski and Rafael Kubelik.  Their love of music grew into a love of each other.  This is their official engagement picture.
